Matthew 12:1-8

“At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were hungry, and began to pluck the heads of grain and to eat. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, ‘Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!’

But He said to them, ‘Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests?

Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? Yet I say to you that in this place is One greater than the temple. But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Why did the Pharisees see when the disciples began to pick the heads of grain and rub them between their hands (to get the husk off) and eat it anyways? Do you mean that there can be some in the crowd that is following Jesus that are there for ulterior motives?

Why do you follow Jesus? Because that’s the church you were born into and grew up in? That’s the one grandma went to? You like the music? The building and flowers sure are nice? You like the kind of people that go to that one? What brings you to church every week?

I believe that the right answer is simple: truth. What church teaches the truth about the love and law of God? I think that this is the idea that Jesus was getting at here. Is holding to a ceremonial rule more important than David and his men fainting from hunger? No. Do we call making some food on the Sabbath “work” and so forbid and condemn someone who might do that? It is plain in the Bible that we should refrain from our daily labor and try to avoid non-Jesus things on the Sabbath, but to make some food? They had the wrong focus.

I appreciate that Jesus still emphasized that He was the Lord of the Sabbath. In no way did He minimize the day, He actually established that it was HIS! Today, as I write this, it is the Sabbath. June 22, 2019. So, happy Sabbath!
